INFORMATION FOR STUDENT SPEECH-LANGUAGE CLINICIANS
RETURN TO JOB DESCRIPTION
Meadowood Springs Speech and Hearing Camp is located near Pendleton in the Blue Mountains of Eastern Oregon. Its two-fold purpose is to provide intensive speech and language therapy to children age 6 to 16, while providing valuable experience and clinical clock hours to student clinicians. The vision for this summer experience is to provide speech and language therapy in natural communication settings through an integration model and to provide opportunities for concentrated individual therapy when needed.
There will be two 10-day sessions
(see attached schedule for specific dates). We anticipate
60 campers per session and we are searching for 24
student clinicians. If we reach these goals, we anticipate
that each student clinician will be responsible for
two-three campers each session. The camp provides
activities in Nature, Aquatics, Arts and Crafts and
Sports.
It is expected that the student clinicians will provide
therapy within each of these activities, as well
as individually for each camper for whom he/she is
responsible.
We are looking for student clinicians who want and can tolerate a camp experience and who are willing to spend four weeks totally dedicated to their campers. We want to send our campers home with new skills and a positive camping experience. You must be flexible, cooperative, willing to take constructive criticism, patient, willing to explain what you are doing to other staff members who do not have your background and experience, and able to tolerate difference in others.
The following information is designed to answer most of the questions we anticipate you would have about this summer experience. If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact us.
DAILY/WEEKLY SCHEDULE:
Student clinicians are expected to be with campers from flag time immediately prior to breakfast to the end of the evening activities, except designated rest and planning times. There is a designated rest time for all campers and camp personnel each afternoon. Each student clinician will be given designated planning time and free time daily.
UNIVERSITY CREDIT/CLINICAL CLOCK HOURS:
Credits will be arranged through either Eastern Washington University or Washington State University, choice to be made by the student. (These credits are transferable). Credits will be given for clinical practicum (2 credits if you work one session and 4 credits if you work both sessions) and academic credit for special seminars, to be arranged. It is expected that each student clinician will receive approximately 4 to 6 clinical clock hours per day. Priority will be given to students who indicate on their application that they will attend both sessions. Meadowood will pay the tuition directly to the University.
Each student will be supervised by an ASHA certified Speech-Language Pathologist (Master Clinician). Each student will receive evaluations at the end of each session. Grades will be sent to the University of registration.
Students will be paid a stipend of $20/week to help cover personal expenses while at camp. Meadowood currently does not pay a salary for this clinical experience. This experience will count toward your certified clinical clock hours. Room and Board are provided by the camp.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Student clinicians are housed in an area of the camp separate from the dormitories provided for campers. Accommodations include heated cabins which house 2 to 4 people each and include beds, chest of drawers and wall pegs. A common staff lodge includes recreation/meeting area with TV and VCR, men's and women's toilet and shower facilities (with plenty of hot water), and kitchenette. Laundry facilities are available. Students are responsible for personal hygiene and good housekeeping practices.
It is expected that most of the inclusional therapy will take place during daily activities with two periods reserved for traditional pull-out therapy. Facilities include: swimming pool, arts and crafts area, camp store, and dining hall with additional recreation areas. Outdoor areas include a stream, small lake, basketball court, playground, open play field and campfire area.
Individual therapy can take place in any vacant space, outdoors or indoors.
